Google Filters Ignore Low-Volume Review Extortion and Validate Coordinated Cascading Attacks
Google's local algorithm filters extortion attacks based on raw volume thresholds rather than content, observes Joy Hawkins.
The system automatically remediates attacks of 15 to 20 one-star reviews within 48 hours when processed through the dedicated extortion reporting form.
Conversely, the automated filters completely ignore low-volume attacks of three to five reviews, leaving the targeted profiles permanently penalized.
Separately, regarding public responses, provoking a reviewer online triggers review cascading, where the initial user recruits external accounts to drop additional one-star ratings.
The system refuses to remove these secondary reviews because the algorithm parses the unique wording and distinct account origins as organic user intent, effectively blinding the spam filter to the coordinated attack.
